Portage Reformed Church...What We Believe
We believe what the Bible says. First, God created everything for His own glory. Second, mankind rebelled against God, and fell into sin and under God's wrath-- revealed partially now and fully in eternity in Hell. Third, we escape God's wrath and fulfill God's original intention for us by God's gracious covenant plan of salvation. God the Father chose whom He would save out of the entire human race, before we were even born. Then, God the Son, Jesus Christ, became man, and lived a perfect, sinless life. He then offered Himself as our substitute, being consumed by God's eternal wrath on the cross which we deserved. The Holy Spirit now works in us to give us faith in Christ, so that we become one with Christ-- His perfect life is credited to our account, and our sins which bring wrath were credited to Christ and paid for on the cross. Finally, the Holy Spirit lives in us now, and gives us a glimpse of the glory that we will have when Christ returns to judge the world and to bring us into His presence. This is the Reformed faith in a nutshell. Of course, you will hear a lot more about God's mercy and grace in predestination, about how God works through covenants, how the Bible has one consistent theme: God's plan to save His elect in Jesus Christ, and about the Reformed world-and-life view (why it isn't "more holy" to be a missionary than a college student). We are enthusiastically Reformed, and we want you to tap into the riches of Reformation Christianity!
